CREATIVE SPOTLIGHT - TWO BROKE SLAGS

Two Broke Slags is a sex-positive podcast and the love child of co-hosts Jess Doolan and Lizzie Brown. In each episode, they explore and discuss a feminist issue, with topics ranging from hard-hitting like abortions to light-hearted and funny, que first times. They aim to speak from an open and honest point of view, leaving no stone unturned. We spoke to them to get their opinions on all things podcasts.

How did you meet your co-host?

J: We met at the students union (yikes) at Leeds uni. Our friendship really took off when we went on holiday to Kavos when we were 21 (double yikes). We lived together in our third year of university and this is when we realised how hilarious we are.

L:  I met my freak of a co-host on a rubbish freshers night out during our time at uni in Leeds! The event was Fruity and it's a legendary Leeds Uni SU night out. Jess & one of my friends who I was out with had been chatting to the same lad so we were giving evils across the smoking area but a few rollies and 17 VKs later we were all best mates and the rest is history.

How would you summarise your podcast?

J: It’s a feminist take on modern dating and all things wxman. For me it’s about breaking down taboos surrounding wxmen’s experiences but also having a laugh about it. I wanted to create a fun and honest place where people can listen to authentic experiences.

L: Our podcast is a love letter to modern day femininity. We are steadfast in our dedication to sexual liberation during your early 20s, we want all womxn to feel empowered by their sexuality and be inspired by their own damn selves.

What made you want to start your podcast?

J: The first ever podcast I listened to was Guys We Fucked and I loved how the presenters spoke. It was a mixed bag of poking fun at themselves and their experiences whilst still discussing some hard hitting topics and this is what me and Lizzie try to emulate with ours. Aside from this I always found UK based sex and dating podcasts to be quite polished and felt like people held back due to fears of being judged so I felt there was a gap in the market for two loud and proud girls.

L: We could chat shite for England and we always thought we were absolutely hilarious, therefore, why not capitalise it? We are always getting up to daft escapades so Its basically our civil duty to share our stupid wisdom with the masses. We aim to be the older sisters we needed when we were younger.

What has been your favorite episode to date?

J: I think for me it’s probably the Female Pleasure episode (https://open.spotify.com/episode/3WF6a8QYf0c0LchJ3XUxih?si=3e17f45f59b846f7) because it’s super funny and at the same time breaking down stigma.

L: The First Times (https://open.spotify.com/episode/4Qfp4ThFzR3uCPdamD8TS6?si=cffe0f14304f4e1f) episodes was absolutely jokes to record as we were thick of Tesco's finest white wine by the end of it but personally the Abortion (https://open.spotify.com/episode/0PZbwN3xoj2MyCeTQHV6sb?si=c92adfdd169b4f24)  episode was the most theraputic and empowering thing I could imagine doing.

Do you think it’s important to remain authentic when recording a podcast?

J: 10000000% I think this is why people love TBS so much, because we are unapologetically ourselves.

L: 100000%, Authenticity is one of our core values over at Two Broke Slags!

What are you currently listening to?

J: I’m loving Katherine Ryan Telling Everybody Everything, she’s one of my fave comedians. Song wise Angie Stone - “Wish I Didn’t Love you”

L: Solange - "Seat At The Table" Amy Whinehouse - "Frank" Free Nationals - Self Titled

What would be your advice for someone wanting to start a podcast?

J: Just bloody do it, what have you got to lose. You can spend your whole life thinking of what ifs.

L: Get a £20 mic off amazon and plan your episodes! It's so easy to go off topic so having a brief plan of what you want to say is such a lifesaver.

Who would be your dream guest?

J: For me it would have to be Alison Hammond, she's just an absolute icon.

L: Bimini Bon Boulash, Lily Allen, your dad xx
